Adventures in Weight Watching (Week 2)

This week I only lost .2 lbs, but at least I lost something! After so many weeks without losing, .2 lbs actually feels like a pretty huge accomplishment for me.
I’ve been pretty active lately with working on the new house, (even though I still gave not made it to the gym in a few weeks). I found a lot of the jobs we’ve been doing around the house listed in the activity points so it’s been kind of cool to be able to track all that hard work!
Unfortunately, I’ve also eaten every single activity point I’ve earned, hence the lack of any significant weight-loss. All this hard work has made me starving lately. I’m honestly not used being very hungry most of the time. Even after several hours without food, it is not typically hunger that motivates me to eat.
I’ve changed my weigh-in day from Thursday to Monday, and therefore the day my weekly points switches has also changed. This has thrown me off a bit with eating my flex points which I typically save for the weekend, but now feel like I’m running out before Monday arrives. I will give it a few more weeks and see how it goes, but may end up switching my weigh-in to Friday.
Hoping for a little more than .2 this week!

Adventures in Weight Watching (Week 1)

I just weighed in after my first week returning to Weight Watchers after more than a month off. I ended up with a 3 lb loss, which really just brings me back down to where I was before I took a break.
I’ve definitely been in a bit of a slump for several months now, and haven’t really been losing anything (up a pound one week, down one the next). I’m hoping that this break will jump start things and get me losing consistently again.
My current short term goal is to lose at least 8.4 lbs by 2/27/12. Technically, I should be able to lose more than that, but I wanted to give myself an attainable goal because I’m not really in a good position to be disappointed again!
Weight Watchers has adjusted the program slightly for 2012, but I don’t know much about it yet. The two changes I’ve heard about are that you can now eat 3 points less than before if you do not experience weight-loss on your original number (I will definitely try this if I start to plateau again) and now you can use the Simply Filling method from day to day rather than only week to week. I’ve never actually done Simply Filling, but basically it is eating only Power Foods (foods known to be filling and sustain you) and you eat until you’re satisfied, no point counting is involved. Does anyone else have a better understanding of Points Plus 2012? I’d love to hear any other information. Because my Internet access is extremely limited right now, I haven’t really been able to find out much.

Adventures in Weight Watching (Week 0)

Just a little update, I weighed in today for the first time in over 30 days and have only gained 2.4 lbs. I’m pretty pleased with myself considering 1. I have not tracked in over 30 days, 2. There were 3 holidays in between, 3. It was in the middle of the day just after lunch rather than first thing in the morning when I usually do it, and 4. Its my time of the month. That’s pretty impressive, if I do say so myself! Hopefully I’ll have a big loss after this week, since I’m technically starting all over again!

Adventures in Weight Watching

I ended up taking the last month off of Weight Watchers. Essentially, that just means I wasn’t weighing in or tracking points. It does not mean that I’ve made any drastic changes in my eating habits. One thing that did change is that I haven’t been to the gym much lately.
We’ve been in the process of moving for the last 30 days (and are far from done yet), living with family, our belonging in boxes scattered around other peoples homes, and now finally in our new home but with no kitchen. I finally found the box with my scale in it, but I’m a little nervous to step on it. We’ve mostly been eating the same things we were eating doing WW but with doing lots of eating in other peoples homes, and the holidays stuck in there, we haven’t had complete control of our food options, but we have done the best we can with what has been available.
Since its a new year, and I’m starting up again, I’m counting this as Week 1, so as long as my Internet is finally up and running at the house by then, next Monday should be my 2012, Week 1 post.

Element Fitness

I finally decided I needed to get my butt up off the couch and get active in order to keep this weight-loss thing on a roll.  For quite awhile, I’ve been thinking about signing up for a Zumba class but wasn’t sure that I wanted to pay a couple of hundred bucks for a few months of class.  I recently discovered Element Fitness for Women in Okemos, MI (about 5 minutes from my house) and learned that they had Zumba classes that you could attend for $8 per class.  Then a few days later I actually got a postcard in the mail from Element offering me a 2 year membership (including the gym AND all classes) for only $12 a month.  Hmmm… Let me think about that… YES, PLEASE!

So far I have had two training sessions with a great trainer (these were free with the membership).  He taught me some new things about working out more effectively (I will share more about this later in another post) that were quite surprising.  The equipment at the gym is all brand spanking new, and fancy.  The machines are powered by air compression, so there are no actual weights on them just air-pressure.  And they are controlled by a touch-screen.  It’s pretty darn cool!

There are at least a down different classes offered during the week, and so far I’ve tried three.

Muscle Sculpt:  This is the first class I took, and it was KILLER!  I think I may have to work myself up to this one, as I could barely walk for about 5 days afterward.  It was an amazing workout though, and once I build up a little more endurance and get my body used to working, I’ll definitely check it out again.  This class used mostly hand-weights (ranging from 5 to 15 lbs) and we used a step.  I have never done so many squats and lunges before in my entire life!  The good thing is, it’s the first time I’ve ever been able to do them and not had my knees hurt!

Zumba:  Element offers several different Zumba classes that are on different levels.  I decided to start with the beginner class, since it was my first time.  I struggled with the steps a little (I have no rhythm or coordination for that matter) but could have handled a little more intensity.  I think I’ll keep going to this class until I get a little more comfortable with the steps and then move up to the next level.

Balance in Motion:  The purpose of this class is to help you develop your balance, and for anyone who knows me, YOU KNOW I NEED THIS!!!  I’ve only been to the class once, and I did terribly, but I had a fun time and felt like I got a decent workout from it.  Everyone promised me that it would get easier with practice.  The class is done entirely on either fitness balls or stability discs and we used medicine balls for weight.  I actually have a ball at home (that I’ve never used in the ways we used it in class), that I really need to start using more so that I don’t make a total fool of myself in the next class!

I’m going to my second Zumba class tonight and look forward to trying other new classes in the upcoming weeks!  I’ll keep you updated on how things go!

Adventures In Weight Watching (Week 26)

Well, once again it’s my time of the month (or first time of the month, in my case) so I had a little gain of 0.4 lbs.  Hopefully I will see a bigger loss next week after the bloating dissipates.

I just realized that I have been terrible at posting about my husband’s progress so I figured it was time for a little update on him.  First of all, at this point he is not really tracking his points anymore, he is just eating a lot better because of the food options that are available to him in our house these days and because he has a wife lovingly reminding him about how much he eats, and sweetly urging him to drink more water and consume more fruits and veggies.  It’s true, I promise!  😉  Anyway, he has managed to lose over 50 lbs and is now about 5 lbs less than I am (and about the same height).  I have to just keep reminding myself that thankfully I am now the only one of us who has boobs, and that counts for my 5 extra pounds!  That works, right? (My husband just corrected me and said that counts for like 25 lbs in my case, lol.  Dear God, I hope not, but that would certainly explain the back problems!)

A couple of days ago I finally tried on a pair of brand new jeans that I bought last spring several sizes too small that I’ve been working my way into.  To my great surprise, they are actually huge on me!  A friend actually made fun of how saggy the butt was!  So apparently, even though I haven’t been losing a lot of poundage lately I’ve been losing a lot of inches.  I really wish I had measured myself from the start because I have no idea where I started and it seems a little pointless to measure myself now that I’m halfway through.  I might anyway one of these days though.

I’ve been drinking what seems like excessive amounts of water lately and so the bowel troubles appear to be improving.  I’m still not totally back to normal but it’s becoming more consistent.  Thanks for those of you who gave suggestions!  I’m realizing that since I’ve always been one to drink a lot of water (the “suggested” daily amount), that if I’m consuming a lot more fiber than I used to I need to drink significantly more water than average.  I’m peeing constantly, but it seems to be doing the job!

Recently my husband and I came across these photos from his graduation in March of 2011 (I don’t know what is going on with my eye in the picture, it didn’t look like that in real life, but who’s paying any attention to my eye when you’ve got all those chins to admire.)

When I saw these photos right after they were taken, I realized for the very first time just how big I/we had actually gotten and it made me cry!  It was just a few days weeks later that we finally started Weight Watchers.

The above and below photos are from this past Sunday after having lost almost 30 lbs (Juleen) and over 50 lbs (Noob).  We still have a ways to go (me more than him) but seeing this made me realize what a difference we have already made!

Adventures In Weight Watching (Week 25)

Ugh, where has the time gone?  It’s been soooo many weeks since I’ve posted!  I actually didn’t even know what week I was on, had to count!  This week I lost 0.6 lbs for a total of 27.8 lbs.  I’ve only lost about 7 lbs total in the last two months, and I’ve been getting a little frustrated.  It’s been back and forth, up and down a pound or two each week lately.

In my last post I alluded to some “health issues” which were complicating my weight-loss and I had a lot of questions about that.  I really didn’t want to get into it, but since you asked… and since this might be something that others of you have had to deal with, I figured I’d get down and dirty and tell you all about it.  I’VE BEEN CONSTIPATED!!!  I’m talking hard-core constipation, for weeks on end!  I’ve been bloated, and gassy, and I feel like I have to poop all the time, but I’m lucky if I can squeeze out a marble every now and then (hey, you guys asked!!!).  It was all very strange because I eat a FiberOne bar for breakfast every morning (and typically end up eating another one at some point in the day), and eat ungodly amounts of fruits and veggies each day.  You’d think I’d have the exact opposite problem.  After I  a few weeks of this, I started taking fiber pills every morning, still to no avail.  Then I tried laxatives, and that didn’t even help!  Lastly (at my mother, the nurse’s insistence) I resorted to giving myself an ENEMA!!!  Oh how horrifying and terrible that was (I did it while my husband was at work because the whole process is just not something I wanted him to partake of).  That cleared me out for a minute, but after about 48 hours I was all bound up again.  Let me make myself very clear… I’m not posting this because I’ve had some wonderful revelation about what caused the constipation and how to fix it.  NO, unfortunately the problem still persists.  What I’m looking for is YOUR HELP!!!  Has anyone else had similar issues while dieting, specifically doing Weight Watchers?  Does anyone have any suggestions for how to relieve this problem?  I’ve been forcing myself to drink extra water (beyond the usual 8-10 servings a day) and that is helping a little bit, but I am still far from regular.  Please post your recommendations in the comments here on my blog, or send them to me directly via

BTW, the morning after the enema, I weighed in having lost 9 lbs!  Just take a moment and ponder that!  My weight kept going up and up for a couple of weeks despite faithfully sticking to “the plan”, so thankfully since then it is slowly creeping back down.

I’ll keep you updated!
